Prescription requiredYes — prescription only

Mebendazole is an antiparasitic medicine in the anthelmintic class. It works by stopping certain intestinal worms from taking up the sugar they need to survive, so the body can clear them.

Emverm (mebendazole) is FDA-approved to treat

Infections of the digestive tract in people 2 years of age and older caused by:

  • Pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis)
  • Whipworm (Trichuris trichiura)
  • Roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides)
  • Hookworm (Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus)

Vermox Chewable is FDA-approved for roundworm and whipworm infections. Providers may also prescribe mebendazole for other parasitic worm infections when they judge it appropriate. Read more about parasite treatment options or mebendazole.

About compounded mebendazole

Our mebendazole 200mg and 400mg capsules and our ivermectin/mebendazole combination capsules are compounded by our licensed pharmacy to USP <795> standards, using ingredients sourced only from NABP-certified wholesalers, in strengths and combinations that are not sold commercially. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved, and the FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness, or quality before they are dispensed. They are prepared for individual patients under a valid prescription.

How Ordering Works

  1. Complete a short health intake. Choose your mebendazole and answer a few questions about your health, other medicines, and why you need treatment. It takes about five minutes.
  2. A licensed provider reviews it. A licensed healthcare provider reviews your answers, may follow up with you by telehealth, and decides whether mebendazole is right for you. If it is, they choose the strength and amount and send the prescription to our pharmacy.
  3. Our pharmacy prepares and ships it. Our Florida pharmacists check the prescription, prepare your capsules, and ship your order by FedEx, usually within 1 to 2 business days after approval.

You are only charged the $30 provider review fee and shipping if a provider approves your prescription.

Choosing a Strength & How to Take It

You do not have to work out your own dose. The right amount of mebendazole depends on the type of worm infection and how long treatment needs to last, so your prescriber chooses the strength and how many capsules you take.

200mg capsulesFrom $180 for 60 capsules ($3.00 per capsule).
400mg capsulesFrom $300 for 60 capsules ($5.00 per capsule). A higher strength can mean fewer capsules, if your provider prescribes it.
Ivermectin + mebendazole 18mg/200mgFrom $180 for 30 capsules ($6.00 per capsule).
Ivermectin + mebendazole 25mg/250mgFrom $210 for 30 capsules ($7.00 per capsule).

The combination capsules contain both ivermectin and mebendazole in one capsule. They are for patients whose provider prescribes the two medicines together; your provider decides whether a single medicine or a combination fits your prescription.

Take mebendazole exactly as prescribed. Take up to the amount on your prescription label and no more. The FDA-approved labels say no fasting is needed, so mebendazole can be taken with or without food unless your provider tells you otherwise. Do not take mebendazole with metronidazole (see Warnings).

Mebendazole Labeled Dosing (Reference)

Your prescriber sets your dose

This table is for reference only, so you know what to expect. It is not a guide for treating yourself. Your licensed provider decides the strength, how many capsules you take, and for how long, based on your infection, your health history, and the product prescribed.

The FDA-approved mebendazole products are chewable tablets. Their labels give these doses for adults and children 2 years and older (Emverm) or 1 year and older (Vermox Chewable):

InfectionEmverm100mg chewable tabletVermox Chewable500mg chewable tablet
Pinworm1 tablet (100mg), onceNot a labeled use
Whipworm1 tablet morning and evening for 3 days1 tablet (500mg), once
Roundworm1 tablet morning and evening for 3 days1 tablet (500mg), once
Hookworm1 tablet morning and evening for 3 daysNot a labeled use

The Emverm label advises a second course of treatment if the infection is not cured three weeks after treatment. Our 200mg and 400mg capsules and the ivermectin/mebendazole combination capsules are compounded, not the labeled chewable tablets. Your provider decides whether and how to use them for your prescription.

Take only what is prescribed

Take up to the amount on your prescription label and no more. Do not change your dose, take extra, or use this table to choose a dose on your own.

Mebendazole Side Effects

Common side effects

  • Stomach pain or diarrhea
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Gas
  • Loss of appetite
  • Rash

Serious side effects: get medical help right away

  • Hives, swelling of the face, lips, or throat, or trouble breathing
  • A blistering, peeling, or spreading skin rash
  • Fever, chills, sore throat, or infections that keep coming back (possible low white blood cell count)
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark urine
  • Seizures

Warnings & Interactions

Tell your provider before you take mebendazole if you

  • take metronidazole. The FDA labels say to avoid taking mebendazole and metronidazole together, because of reports of serious skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis);
  • are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding;
  • have liver disease or a blood disorder;
  • are allergic to mebendazole or any ingredient in the capsule.

The combination capsules also contain ivermectin. If one is prescribed, also tell your provider if you take warfarin or another blood thinner, have a weak immune system, are allergic to ivermectin, or have lived in or traveled to Central or West Africa (a Loa loa infection raises the risk of serious brain reactions with ivermectin).

Low white blood cell counts have been reported with mebendazole at higher doses and for longer than recommended for intestinal worm infections, so your provider may check your blood counts. Seizures have been reported in infants under 1 year of age.

Mebendazole FAQ

Do I need a prescription to buy mebendazole online?

Yes. Mebendazole is a prescription medication. You complete a short online health intake, a licensed provider reviews it, and our pharmacy fills your order only if the provider approves a prescription.

Is your mebendazole FDA-approved?

No. The FDA-approved mebendazole products are chewable tablets sold under the brand names Emverm (100mg) and Vermox Chewable (500mg). We do not sell those brand products. Our mebendazole 200mg and 400mg capsules and our ivermectin/mebendazole combination capsules are compounded by our licensed pharmacy to USP <795> standards, using ingredients sourced only from NABP-certified wholesalers, and are prepared for individual patients under a valid prescription. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved.

What is mebendazole used for?

Mebendazole is an antiparasitic medicine for intestinal worm infections. The FDA-approved Emverm label covers pinworm, whipworm, roundworm and hookworm infections of the digestive tract. Your provider decides whether mebendazole is right for your condition.

How much does mebendazole cost?

Prices start at $180 for 60 capsules of the 200mg strength ($3.00 per capsule). The 400mg strength starts at $300 for 60 capsules ($5.00 per capsule). Ivermectin/mebendazole combination capsules start at $180 for 30 capsules (18mg/200mg, $6.00 per capsule) and $210 for 30 capsules (25mg/250mg, $7.00 per capsule). A $30 provider review fee and shipping are added at checkout, and the full price is shown before you check out.

Which mebendazole strength is right for me?

Your prescriber decides. The dose and how long you take it depend on the type of infection and your health history, so the provider who reviews your intake chooses the strength and number of capsules for you.

How fast will my order ship?

Approved orders usually ship within 1 to 2 business days after approval. You can choose FedEx 2Day for $10 or FedEx Overnight for $50.

Where do you ship?

We ship by FedEx to U.S. addresses where our pharmacy is licensed to ship. If we are not able to ship to your address, we will let you know before your order is filled.

Can I return mebendazole if I change my mind?

No. For safety reasons, dispensed prescription medications cannot be returned or exchanged. Please contact us before your order ships if you have questions.
