Compounded Albendazole 400mg (not Albenza and not FDA-approved) is a prescription anthelmintic, or anti-worm, medication. It works by preventing parasitic worms from absorbing sugar, which depletes their energy and kills them. Albendazole, the active ingredient in Albenza, is FDA-approved to treat neurocysticercosis and hydatid disease, both of which are caused by tapeworm infections.

Albendazole 400mg
Anthelmintic (antiparasitic) medication for neurocysticercosis and hydatid disease caused by tapeworm infections
What Albendazole 400mg Treats
What is Albendazole 400mg?
Albendazole is a broad-spectrum antiparasitic medication in the benzimidazole class and the active ingredient in FDA-approved Albenza; this compounded 400mg capsule is not Albenza and is not FDA-approved. It treats infections caused by the larval forms of certain tapeworms. Albendazole works by blocking the worm's ability to absorb glucose, which starves the parasite of energy and leads to its death. Treatment length and dosing depend on the specific infection, your body weight, and your prescriber's instructions.
What it treats
- Neurocysticercosis (pork tapeworm infection of the brain)
- Hydatid disease of the liver, lung, and peritoneum (Echinococcus tapeworm infection)
- Parenchymal brain cysts caused by Taenia solium
- Cystic echinococcosis caused by Echinococcus granulosus
How to Take Albendazole 400mg
- Hydatid disease (?60 kg): 400mg by mouth twice daily with meals for 28 days, followed by 14 days off; repeat for 3 cycles.
- Neurocysticercosis (?60 kg): 400mg by mouth twice daily with meals for 8–30 days.
- Patients under 60 kg: 15 mg/kg/day in two divided doses (maximum 800mg/day).
Your prescriber will determine the dose and duration that are right for you. Always follow the directions on your prescription label.
