What Amlodipine 2.5mg Treats
What is Amlodipine 2.5mg?
Amlodipine 2.5mg (brand name Norvasc) is a prescription calcium channel blocker used to lower high blood pressure and treat certain types of chest pain (angina). It works by relaxing blood vessels so the heart doesn't have to pump as hard, improving blood flow. Lowering blood pressure helps reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack, and kidney problems. Amlodipine is taken once daily as a tablet and requires a valid prescription from a licensed U.S. prescriber.
What it treats
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Chronic stable angina (chest pain)
- Vasospastic angina (Prinzmetal's angina)
- Coronary artery disease (angiographically documented)
- Reduction of hospitalization risk for angina in coronary artery disease
How to Take Amlodipine 2.5mg
- Hypertension: 5 mg by mouth once daily; may start at 2.5 mg once daily; max 10 mg once daily.
- Angina/coronary artery disease: 5–10 mg by mouth once daily.
- Elderly or hepatic impairment: start 2.5 mg once daily.

Amlodipine 2.5mg FAQ
What is amlodipine 2.5mg used for?
Amlodipine 2.5mg is used to treat high blood pressure and certain types of chest pain (angina), including chronic stable angina and vasospastic angina. It is often prescribed as a starting dose, particularly for older adults or people with liver problems, and may be increased by your prescriber if needed.
Do I need a prescription for amlodipine?
Yes. We can provide the prescription for Amlodipine 2.5mg through our telehealth consultation if a licensed provider approves the treatment. Complete our online health questions for the provider to review. If approved, the prescription is sent directly to All Family Pharmacy for pharmacist review, dispensing, and shipping directly to your front door. You do not need to get a prescription from your primary care provider first.
How long does it take for amlodipine to work?
Amlodipine begins lowering blood pressure within hours of the first dose, but its full effect typically develops over one to two weeks of consistent daily use. Keep taking it as prescribed even if you feel well, since high blood pressure often has no symptoms.
What is the difference between amlodipine and Norvasc?
Norvasc is the brand name for amlodipine besylate; generic amlodipine contains the same active ingredient and is FDA-approved as equivalent. Your pharmacist can tell you which version your prescription will be filled with.
What are the most common side effects of amlodipine?
The most common side effects are swelling of the ankles or feet, dizziness, flushing, fatigue, and palpitations. Contact your healthcare provider if side effects are persistent or bothersome, or if you experience worsening chest pain or severe dizziness.
Can I stop taking amlodipine if my blood pressure is normal?
Do not stop amlodipine without talking to your prescriber, as your blood pressure may rise again and chest pain can worsen. Your provider can advise whether any dose changes are appropriate.
