Fluorouracil 5% Cream
Topical chemotherapy cream for actinic keratosis and superficial basal cell carcinoma
What Fluorouracil 5% Cream Treats
What is Fluorouracil 5% Cream?
Fluorouracil 5% cream (Efudex) is a prescription topical medication classified as an antineoplastic antimetabolite. It interferes with the growth of abnormal skin cells by blocking DNA production, causing damaged cells to die and slough off. It is FDA-approved to treat multiple actinic (solar) keratoses, which are rough, precancerous patches caused by sun damage. The 5% strength is also approved for superficial basal cell carcinoma when conventional treatments such as surgery are impractical.
What it treats
- Actinic keratosis (multiple actinic or solar keratoses)
- Superficial basal cell carcinoma (when conventional methods are impractical)
- Precancerous sun-damaged skin lesions on the face and scalp
- Sun-damaged lesions on other body areas as directed by a prescriber
How to Use Fluorouracil 5% Cream
- Actinic keratosis: Apply a thin layer to lesions twice daily for 2–4 weeks.
- Superficial basal cell carcinoma: Apply twice daily for 3–6 weeks; up to 10–12 weeks may be needed.
- Apply with a nonmetal applicator or gloved fingertip; wash hands after use.
Your prescriber will determine the dose and duration that are right for you. Always follow the directions on your prescription label.

Fluorouracil 5% Cream FAQ
Do I need a prescription for fluorouracil 5% cream?
Yes. Fluorouracil cream is a prescription-only medication in the United States. A licensed healthcare provider must evaluate your skin condition and approve the prescription before the pharmacy can dispense it.
What is fluorouracil 5% cream used for?
Fluorouracil 5% cream is FDA-approved to treat multiple actinic (solar) keratoses, which are precancerous patches caused by sun damage. The 5% strength is also approved for superficial basal cell carcinoma when standard treatments like surgery are not practical.
How long does it take for fluorouracil cream to work?
For actinic keratosis, treatment usually lasts 2 to 4 weeks, and healing may continue for 1 to 2 months after stopping. Skin often becomes red, irritated, and crusted during treatment, which is an expected part of how the medication works.
Is fluorouracil cream the same as Efudex?
Yes. Efudex is the brand name for fluorouracil 5% cream. Generic fluorouracil 5% cream contains the same active ingredient and is held to the same FDA standards.
Can I be in the sun while using fluorouracil cream?
Fluorouracil increases your skin's sensitivity to sunlight, so you should minimize sun exposure and avoid tanning beds during treatment. Ask your prescriber about sun protection for treated areas, since some sunscreens may irritate the skin while it is healing.
