What Ivermectin Treats
What is Ivermectin?
Ivermectin is a prescription antiparasitic medication in the anthelmintic drug class. Ivermectin is the active ingredient in FDA-approved Stromectol (3mg tablets); this compounded 12mg tablet formulation is not Stromectol and is not FDA-approved. In tablet form, it is used to treat intestinal strongyloidiasis (threadworm infection) and onchocerciasis (river blindness). It works by binding to channels in the nerve and muscle cells of parasites, causing paralysis and death of the organism. Ivermectin is also available in topical forms for other conditions, but the 12mg tablet is used specifically for internal parasitic infections diagnosed by a healthcare provider.
What it treats
- Intestinal strongyloidiasis (threadworm infection)
- Onchocerciasis (river blindness)
- Off-label: certain other parasitic infections as directed by a provider
How to Take Ivermectin
- Strongyloidiasis: 200 mcg/kg by mouth as a single dose on an empty stomach with water.
- Onchocerciasis: 150 mcg/kg by mouth as a single dose; may be repeated every 3 to 12 months per provider.
- Follow your prescriber's exact weight-based dosing instructions.
Your prescriber will determine the dose and duration that are right for you. Always follow the directions on your prescription label.
Dosing shown is for Ivermectin 12mg Tablet. Each strength has its own directions in the comparison above and on its product page.

Choosing Between Tablets, Capsules, and Creams
Our oral options include the standard 3mg ivermectin tablet and compounded capsules in 9mg, 12mg, 18mg, 30mg, and 45mg strengths. Oral dosing is typically based on body weight and the condition being treated, which is why the reviewing provider — not the product page — determines the appropriate strength and course for you.
Our topical options include ivermectin 1% cream and 1.5% cream, as well as a combination cream containing ivermectin 1%, metronidazole 0.75%, and niacinamide 4%, which pairs the antiparasitic with an antimicrobial and a skin-conditioning ingredient. Topical products are most often prescribed for rosacea and related skin conditions. If you're unsure which product to select, choose the one closest to your needs and note your questions in the intake — the provider will adjust the prescription if needed.

Ivermectin FAQ
What is ivermectin used for?
Oral ivermectin is FDA-approved to treat intestinal strongyloidiasis and onchocerciasis, which are parasitic worm infections. Topical ivermectin cream is approved to treat the inflammatory lesions of rosacea. A licensed provider will confirm whether ivermectin is appropriate for your specific condition.
Is ivermectin safe?
Yes — FDA-approved ivermectin products are considered safe when prescribed by a licensed provider and used as directed. Side effects are possible, and it may not be appropriate for people who are pregnant, have liver disease, or take certain medications. Our ivermectin is dispensed only with a valid prescription.
Is ivermectin an antibiotic?
No. Ivermectin is an antiparasitic medication, not an antibiotic, so it does not treat bacterial infections. It works by paralyzing and killing parasites, and in cream form it also helps reduce inflammation associated with rosacea.
How long does it take for ivermectin to kill parasites?
Ivermectin begins acting on parasites within hours of a dose, but how quickly an infection fully resolves varies by the type of parasite and the individual. Some conditions require follow-up testing or repeat treatment. Your provider will explain what to expect for your specific diagnosis.
How much ivermectin should I take?
Oral ivermectin dosing is individualized — it's typically based on your body weight and the condition being treated. We can't provide dosing guidance on this page; the prescribing provider will determine the correct strength and instructions for you, and they'll be printed on your pharmacy label.
Where can I buy ivermectin?
Ivermectin requires a prescription in the United States, so it should only be purchased from a licensed pharmacy. On this page, you can add a product to your cart, complete a health intake, and a licensed U.S. provider will review it. If approved, your prescription is filled and shipped by our licensed U.S. pharmacy.
How long does ivermectin stay in your system?
Ivermectin has a plasma half-life of roughly 18 hours, and most of a dose is eliminated from the body within a few days. Its effects on parasites can continue after the drug itself clears. Individual factors like liver function can affect how long it stays in your system.
