What Metoprolol Succinate ER Treats
What is Metoprolol Succinate ER?
Metoprolol Succinate ER 200mg (brand name Toprol XL) is an extended-release beta-blocker tablet taken once daily. It works by slowing the heart rate and reducing the force of the heart's contractions, which lowers blood pressure and reduces the heart's workload. It is FDA-approved to treat high blood pressure, chest pain (angina), and heart failure. Because it is an extended-release formulation, it delivers medication steadily over 24 hours.
What it treats
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Chest pain (angina pectoris)
- Heart failure (stable, symptomatic NYHA Class II–III)
- Reducing risk of hospitalization in heart failure patients
- Long-term management after certain heart conditions as directed by a physician
How to Take Metoprolol Succinate ER
- Hypertension: 25–100 mg by mouth once daily; may titrate weekly to max 400 mg/day.
- Angina: 100 mg by mouth once daily; titrate as needed to max 400 mg/day.
- Heart failure: start 12.5–25 mg by mouth once daily; double dose every 2 weeks as tolerated to target 200 mg once daily.
Your prescriber will determine the dose and duration that are right for you. Always follow the directions on your prescription label.

Metoprolol Succinate ER FAQ
Do I need a prescription for Metoprolol Succinate ER 200mg?
Yes. Metoprolol succinate is a prescription-only medication in the United States. A valid prescription from a licensed healthcare provider is required before we can dispense it.
What is Metoprolol Succinate ER used for?
It is FDA-approved to treat high blood pressure, chest pain (angina), and stable heart failure. Your doctor may also use it as part of long-term heart care after certain cardiac events.
What is the difference between metoprolol succinate and metoprolol tartrate?
Metoprolol succinate (Toprol XL) is an extended-release form taken once daily, while metoprolol tartrate is immediate-release and usually taken twice daily. The two forms are not interchangeable without your prescriber's guidance.
