What is Minocycline?

Minocycline is a tetracycline antibiotic sold under the brand name Minocin and as a generic. It treats infections caused by susceptible bacteria by preventing them from making the proteins they need to grow. Doctors frequently prescribe it as an adjunctive treatment for moderate to severe inflammatory acne, as well as for respiratory, skin, and urinary tract infections. Minocycline 50mg capsules are taken by mouth and require a prescription in the United States.

What it treats

  • Moderate to severe acne (adjunctive therapy)
  • Respiratory tract infections
  • Skin and skin structure infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Rocky Mountain spotted fever and other rickettsial infections
  • Certain sexually transmitted infections (e.g., chlamydia)
  • Uncomplicated gonococcal infections in penicillin-allergic patients

How to Take Minocycline

  • Usual adult dose: 200 mg by mouth initially, then 100 mg every 12 hours.
  • Alternative: 100–200 mg initially, then 50 mg four times daily.
  • Acne: dosing individualized by prescriber; take with plenty of fluids.

Your prescriber will determine the dose and duration that are right for you. Always follow the directions on your prescription label.

Dosing shown is for Minocycline 50mg. Each strength has its own directions in the comparison above and on its product page.

Minocycline FAQ

Do I need a prescription for minocycline?

Yes. We can provide the prescription for Minocycline 50mg through our telehealth consultation if a licensed provider approves the treatment. Complete our online health questions for the provider to review. If approved, the prescription is sent directly to All Family Pharmacy for pharmacist review, dispensing, and shipping directly to your front door. You do not need to get a prescription from your primary care provider first.

What is minocycline 50mg used for?

Minocycline is a tetracycline antibiotic most often prescribed as part of treatment for moderate to severe acne. It also treats certain respiratory, skin, and urinary tract infections caused by susceptible bacteria.

How does ordering and shipping work?

Your Minocycline 50mg prescription can be provided through our telehealth consultation. Select your medication and complete the online health questions. A licensed provider reviews your health information and, if clinically appropriate, issues the prescription and sends it directly to All Family Pharmacy. Our licensed pharmacists review it before dispensing and shipping your medication directly to your front door. You do not need to obtain a prescription from your primary care provider first.

How should I take minocycline?

Take it exactly as prescribed, usually every 12 hours, with a full glass of water. Avoid taking it at the same time as antacids, iron supplements, or dairy products, which can reduce absorption.

Is minocycline the same as Minocin?

Yes. Minocin is a brand name for minocycline. Generic minocycline contains the same active ingredient and is held to the same FDA standards.

Can I take minocycline if I am pregnant?

Minocycline is not recommended during pregnancy because tetracyclines can harm fetal bone and tooth development. Tell your prescriber if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
