What Mirtazapine Treats
What is Mirtazapine?
Mirtazapine 15mg (brand name Remeron) is a prescription antidepressant tablet used to treat major depressive disorder in adults. It works differently from SSRIs by affecting norepinephrine and serotonin activity in the brain, which may help improve mood, sleep, and appetite. Mirtazapine is typically taken once daily at bedtime because it can cause drowsiness. It is available only with a valid prescription from a licensed U.S. prescriber.
What it treats
- Major depressive disorder (depression)
- Depression with insomnia or sleep difficulty (per prescriber judgment)
- Depression with poor appetite or weight loss (per prescriber judgment)
- Anxiety symptoms associated with depression (per prescriber judgment)
- Off-label uses as directed by a physician
How to Take Mirtazapine
- Start: 15 mg by mouth once daily at bedtime.
- Maintenance: 15–45 mg once daily; adjust at intervals of at least 1–2 weeks.
- Maximum: 45 mg per day.
Your prescriber will determine the dose and duration that are right for you. Always follow the directions on your prescription label.
