A proton pump inhibitor (PPI) for GERD, acid reflux, and erosive esophagitis
What Esomeprazole 40mg Treats
What is Esomeprazole 40mg?
Esomeprazole 40mg (brand name Nexium) is a prescription proton pump inhibitor (PPI) capsule that reduces the amount of acid your stomach produces. It is most commonly prescribed to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), including healing erosive esophagitis caused by acid damage. Esomeprazole is also used to help prevent stomach ulcers in certain patients and, in combination with antibiotics, to treat H. pylori infection. It is taken once daily, typically at least one hour before a meal.
What it treats
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Healing of erosive esophagitis
- Maintenance of healed erosive esophagitis
- H. pylori eradication (with antibiotics) to reduce duodenal ulcer recurrence
- Risk reduction of NSAID-associated gastric ulcers
- Pathological hypersecretory conditions, including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
How to Take Esomeprazole 40mg
- GERD / erosive esophagitis: 20-40 mg by mouth once daily for 4-8 weeks
- Maintenance of healed erosive esophagitis: 20 mg by mouth once daily

Esomeprazole 40mg FAQ
Do I need a prescription for esomeprazole 40mg?
Yes, esomeprazole 40mg capsules require a valid prescription from a licensed U.S. prescriber. A lower-strength over-the-counter version (Nexium 24HR) exists, but the 40mg prescription strength must be authorized by your healthcare provider.
What is esomeprazole 40mg used for?
Esomeprazole is FDA-approved to treat GERD, heal and maintain healing of erosive esophagitis, reduce the risk of NSAID-associated stomach ulcers, and treat H. pylori infection alongside antibiotics. Your prescriber will determine the right use and duration for your condition.
How long does esomeprazole take to work?
Some people notice symptom improvement within a few days, but full effect may take 1 to 4 days of consistent daily dosing. For erosive esophagitis, treatment typically lasts 4 to 8 weeks as directed by your prescriber.
Is esomeprazole the same as Nexium?
Yes, esomeprazole is the active ingredient in Nexium, and generic esomeprazole is considered therapeutically equivalent by the FDA. Generics generally cost less while meeting the same quality standards.
How should I take esomeprazole 40mg?
Take it once daily at least one hour before a meal, swallowing the capsule whole. If you have trouble swallowing, ask your pharmacist about opening the capsule and sprinkling the contents on applesauce per the label instructions.
How does ordering and shipping work?
After you place your order, our pharmacy team verifies your prescription with your prescriber before dispensing. Once verified, medications ship in discreet, temperature-appropriate packaging, and you'll receive tracking information; a pharmacist is available if you have questions.
Can I take esomeprazole long term?
Some conditions require longer treatment, but long-term PPI use has been associated with risks such as bone fractures, low magnesium, and vitamin B12 deficiency. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration appropriate, and review ongoing use with your prescriber.
